Standard Metrics
Many organizations consider their Key Performance Indicators, or KPIs, to be at the top of a metric hierarchy. These KPIs are often treated with extra management and monitoring, strict governance, and heightened scrutiny, while any metrics outside of this subset are defined and managed by analysts. It is this more granular metric tier where the majority of analytical work usually occurs.
The Problems with Metric Hierarchies
Metrics are useful if they describe one another. If we build different classes of metrics, we lose the ability to analyze changes in KPIs and move fluidly between them.
